John 5:16-47
1/Hello, friends!
Welcome to Sunday School!
2/Do you remember the story David talked about last week?
When Jesus visited the temple in Jerusalem, He healed a man who had been paralyzed and lying by a pool for 38 years.
3/Can you imagine how he felt?
He was incredibly happy and excited! He wanted to jump like a kangaroo, and he ran like a cheetah! Then he sat down quietly, something he hadn’t been able to do for 38 years. Because of Jesus’ mercy, he could now walk, run, and sit.
He was filled with joy!
4/ But not everyone was happy.
There were some people who were actually upset.
Why do you think they were angry?
They looked at the man with angry faces and said,
“He shouldn’t be moving so much. He’s breaking the law! Why isn’t he obeying God’s command? Who told you to get up and walk?”
The man told them that Jesus had told him to stand up and walk.
But they weren’t surprised by Jesus’ miracle, and they didn’t feel sorry about his last 38 years.. All they cared about was that the man was breaking a rule on the Sabbath day. They thought it was wrong that Jesus was healing people on the Sabbath.
But why do we have to do nothing on the Sabbath?
5/ God told us, “Keep the Sabbath day holy.” He commanded us to rest on that day.
Did you know that, in the past, people had a lot more work to do at home? They didn’t have vacuums, washing machines, or the conveniences we have now. Moms had to constantly make clothes, wash them by hand, cook food, and fetch water. Even children had to help their parents with a lot of tasks, and it was hard to find time to rest.
But God gave everyone a day to rest and remember Him. That’s why God made the Sabbath day: so that everyone could stop working and take a rest and listen to God.
God created the Sabbath out of love for us, just like He made other laws to protect us. He wants us to be safe and stay close to Him.
6/ To the Jewish leaders, Jesus said, “My Father is always at His work, and I too am working.” To Jesus, the most important thing was bringing life to people, so He kept working to give life, just as God does.
Then Jesus talked about eternal life.
God sent Jesus to earth to give us eternal life.
Let’s read today’s verse together:
“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life.”
— John 5:24
Let’s pray together.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for working every day to care for us.
Thank You for sending Jesus so we can have eternal life.
We are so grateful for Jesus’ love.
Help us to always follow Jesus, who gives us eternal life.
In Jesus Christ’s name, we pray, Amen.
